This is one of very few plays that have been
repeated by the Players. It was first performed some twenty years
earlier in 1957
with Dee Beeching in the title role. This time, Lynda Leigh, in only
her third appearance with the Players, takes on this major role. I
have it on good authority (from the "horse's mouth" as it were, that
Sue Trueman desperately wanted to play the part. However, the
casting panel considered that a pregnant nun would probably be
inappropriate.
One significant difference between the
two performances is the stage itself. When first performed, the
Players were confined to the small hall (the present stage only
being completed in 1973). |
