Ted Rayner proved the hero of the hour by
stepping in when leading man, Jim Saphin, fell victim to the flu at
the most inopportune moment.
It is not the first time that this
famous ghost tale by Noel Coward has been at the centre of an
unplanned drama in Fairlight. When first performed in 1972,
the play itself was a late substitute for "An Inspector Calls",
which was apparently well advanced in rehearsals when the plug was
metaphorically pulled, for reasons which remain a mystery.
It seems that Ted's performance, regardless
of the ever-present script, was very well received. It would, no
doubt, have been unreasonable to expect Percy Hodgson to have
remembered the words for 24 years, and I believe that Rex Harrison
(who played the role in the 1945 film) was
unavailable. |
