A Mother's Lament

by Betty Batt
Written in response the the group's quarterly challenge to write a poem on a specific topic. The topic on this occasion was "families". Betty chose to think about a feathered family ... and why not?!

There are lots of families in my garden.
The mums work hard at getting food.
Kids all squawk from branches and bushes,
"More, more" is what they seem to say
And it goes on like that all day.

Mums must think, Oh what have I done
With kids like this it’s just no fun,
When will they fly on their own?
And leave Mum and Dad alone.
She will search for flies and worms from dawn to dusk.

Kids must be fed - Mum did it for us.
If they would shut up; just for once.
To give her time to stay in the bird bath and just relax,
To think of the good times when she hadn’t a care,
When all she did was to fly through the air.

Mind it’s good to have kids, and be a Mum,
And it’s we who should shut up and get the job done.
So just a few more weeks of this then she’ll be off to the sun.
And it will be all behind her. A good job done.
