April Fool

by Kathy McKay Sinclair

April fool. No one could be a bigger fool than me.
When I look back on my life, and all the mistakes I see.
The friend I lost because I spoke before I thought.
Not to see the difference that the sunshine brought.
Would I make the same mistakes if I could live my life anew?
Perhaps I would think more clearly, wait to see the view.
Instead of sorrow, would there be Joy and peace sublime
Would my inelegant feet tread the wrong path to find
If heaven is there with everything clean and new
Would I take time, then with clear eyes see what is true?
Or trample across the flowers that bloom around my feet?
Eager to laugh and sing, look for pleasure to greet.
Or would I look back, then be frightened to try again
Wait for the good to come, find that I wait in vain?
Then I see my friends, children or descendants I am proud.
Mother Nature may sweep my mistakes, to hide behind a cloud
Perhaps I am not such a fool because of mistakes I made
I now know the difference between the sunshine and the shade.

April Fool let me loose to enjoy it all again.
