| This poem was written in response
to the group's quarterly challenge to write a poem on a given topic.
Having just emerged from the Christmas and New Year's festivities, it
seemed appropriate to choose "Celebration" as our topic on this
occasion. |
Celebration – the subject’s enormous
I just don’t know where I can start
There are so many wonders to find all around
And treasures to gladden the heart.
Do I talk of the snowdrops in springtime
Or the velvety touch of a rose
Or the green of the grass and the blue of the sky
I could mention all these I suppose.
I could talk about science and invention
Created by boffins with brains
From the wheel and the cog to the trips into space
The Internet Highway and planes.
Or the purr of a cat and the wag of a dog
Or an elephant lumbering along
Or a crackling fire or a wonderful dream
Or language or music and song.
Or should it be family and friendship
Or laughter, the joy of a birth,
Perhaps it is freedom, compassion and justice
All striving towards peace on earth
Celebration – the subject’s enormous
So I’ll open my eyes and will say
With the beauty of God in this wonderful world
I will celebrate something each day
