Darkness

by Kathy McKay Sinclair

Darkness falls, and one more day is spent.
I wander in the garden to enjoy the jasmine scent,
The sky dark blue like a velvet evening dress,
Moon shines a silver crescent to impress,

A million stars look down to illuminate the earth
Vixen crooning for a mate, she seeks another birth.
The trees look black; honey-suckle perfume draws me close
I love the garden at night, it’s then it tells the most.

Nightingales sing from their safely hidden nest
Their song so poignant willing us to rest.
April when they take their long flight to our tree,
To retreat in August south to again feel free.

The perfume of flowers at night so strong.
In darkness the robin and nightingales beautiful song.
Not drowned by traffic, lawn mowers and such
But peaceful in the dark I love so much.
