Holidays Had Before

by Norman Dengate

Where to go on holiday? We really must decide
We’ve looked at all the brochures, and put them on one side
Mozambique and Kenya, where on earth is Hyderabad?
Then I starting reminiscing about holidays we’ve had

By coach and tent and caravan and then by motorhome
We seem to have no problem in deciding where to roam
Exploring Devon, then up to the north, cross to the Lakes and up Skiddaw
All these are in our memories, in the holidays we recall.

Now off to Lydd, our tickets bought, there’s no need to wait,
With all our gear for camping in the Humber Hawk Estate
Just drive up the ramp into the nose of the waiting Bristol Freighter
Take off, head south, and there you are, Le Touquet minutes later

Now France to explore, the Normandy coast, mixed memories at the D-Day Beach
Paris . Rheims, Loire Chateaux, all these within our reach
A visit to Monet’s garden, Sarlat , Rocamadour ,
These are in our memories, of holidays had before.

Scottish Lochs and mountains high, sights we wanted not to miss
The Lowlands and the Highlands, the Trossachs all these on our list,
In Edinburgh within its castle saw the Royal Military Tattoo
Again it’s in the memory of our holiday review.

Cross Offa’s Dyke and into Wales, land of castles, mountains, valley
Brecon Beacons and Snowdonia Park , and the Gwent Centre Caravan Rally
Now cross the bridge to Anglesey, a delightful little Isle,
We have all the memories, again within our file.

Holland rated highly of holidays we have taken, we’d go back just like a shot
To see the many places that somehow we forgot,
Amsterdam of course, The Hague and the Zuider Zee
To see small towns built on stilts, protected from the sea.
The Keukenhof , showcase of the bulbs, and to the Festival ‘Floriade’
All these are in our memories of holidays we’ve had.

We have come now to the end, it really was not our intention
To leave Luxembourg and Belgium out, without the slightest mention
Camping in Croatia, by the Adriatic, It was Yugoslavia when we were there, back then,
So as we now are out of time, they must wait till we next rhyme
So till when I next get out my pad, they’ll stay as memories of holidays we’ve had.
