I Don't Remember

by Keith Miller

I don’t remember much about the day we went to war
I don’t recall who started it, or what we’re fighting for
I have a recollection that we need to take a stand
Against someone encroaching onto someone else’s land
I guess we’ll just keep fighting until someone proves they’re right
Or until the weaker party just gives up the will to fight

I don’t remember where I was when Kennedy was shot
They say it’s vital that you know – well, not to me it’s not
I hardly need an alibi for 1963
I hadn’t got a passport so it couldn’t have been me
And anyway, at eight years old, I was just a little kid
I didn’t even know then what a US President did

I don’t recall a single word my history master said
A list of pointless battles and a lot of people dead
Just a load of dates, and kings and queens, and people burning cakes
They never could explain to me what difference it makes
If only Tony Robinson had been there to set the plot
I might have taken notice, but again, most likely not

I don’t remember why it is that I don’t talk to Ted
It must be something that he did, or something that he said
Or, rather, was it Mary who did something bad to Jim
Whichever way, it wasn’t me, so obviously it’s him
Ted’s really not unlikeable, so it seems a little strange
But ‘til one of us says something I guess nothing’s going to change

I don’t remember why it is my kids don’t go to church
Perhaps they didn’t find the truth, perhaps they didn’t search
Perhaps they found that some of us don’t practice what we preach
Or maybe they have hidden depths that I have yet to reach
There’s no way to compel them to believe in what I say
I guess they must be given space to seek out their own way

I don’t remember where I put that wotsname yesterday
I knew I’d need it soon and so I'd not put it away
I recall I had it over there, I can see it in my mind
I daren’t look in that pile of junk, ‘cause who knows what I’d find
I guess I’ll have to go and buy another – hang the cost
And then I’ll put it somewhere with the others that I’ve lost

I don’t remember why it is I started down this track
But now I’ve come as far as this it’s pointless to turn back
So I’ll keep following the way to find out where it goes
Quite what I’ll have to go through I guess no-one really knows
It might be bad, it might be good, I’ll go there just the same
Maybe then I will remember why on earth it was I came
