Owed To A Worm

by Kathy McKay Sinclair
This poem was written in response to our quarterly challenge to write a poem on a particular topic. The topic on this occasion was "hobbies", and it is not entirely clear whether Kathy's hobby is gardening, or just writing poems. Albeit that any link is pretty tenuous, Kathy's poems are always worth a read anyway.

I am a humble creature, living from day to day.
I’m happy in the garden, though it. is mainly clay
Life was been most kind to me, I never asked for much.
I never asked for glory, I could not do with such.

But now I have a problem, I don’t know which way to turn.
Please don’t snigger at me, I’m just a harmless worm.
Kathy had a birthday, numerous plants arrived.
She planted them in the garden, I didn’t know which was to dive.

First she was digging to the left, then it was to the right.
I was waiting in the middle, she gave me such a fright.
Her spade it came down heavily. It cut me right in half.
This is a very sad day for me, I wish you would not laugh.

I don’t know if I’m Him or her, or if I’m Mum or Dad.
My halves are healing, from now I am two, but also very sad.
The more I think about my plight, pondering with a scheme.
If Kathy is careless with her spade. I could became a football team.
