Paralympics

by Margaret Hall

They have called our names out loud,
And now a hush descends on the crowd.
All waiting for the race to start,
Be quiet my loudly beating heart.

The starter says on your marks get ready,
We are off at last and the pace is steady,
Then we begin to accelerate…
The line must be near; I just can’t wait.

A voice says you are third!
The best news that I have heard
It does not matter that I can’t see.
My guide and companion looks after me.

He rescued me from the depths of despair
Taught me life can go on when so many care,
Now I’ve come third in the race that I can run.
And I am truly a PARALYMPIAN.
