Seasons

by Norman Dengate

I’VE LOST MY FAITH IN SEASONS
THEY’RE NO LONGER WHAT THEY WERE
THE TRANQUIL SPRING, SOFT WARMING SUN
GENTLE RAIN, ARE MEMORIES I PREFER

THE SUMMERS TOO, HAVE ALSO CHANGED
FROM THOSE DAYS, WHEN WE WERE SURE
OUR CHILDREN HAD, ON THEIR SUMMER BREAKS
DAILY SUN, AND NOT THE RAIN, WE NOW SEEM TO ENDURE

I’M TOLD IT’S DUE TO GLOBAL WARMING
AND THE GREENHOUSE GASES WE CREATE
ICE SHEETS MELTING, SEA LEVELS RISING
WHILST ‘EL NINO’ AND THE JET STREAM CIRCULATE

OUR RAIN NOW COMES BY DELUGE
AND INCESSANT WINDS WHICH BEAT OUR SHORE
NO WONDER SOMERSET GOT FLOODED
AND LAND BY THE UPPER THAMES, NOT SOAKED BEFORE

FOSSIL FUELS AND HYDROCARBONS
CARBON FOOTPRINTS, ARE ALL TO BLAME ,
EVEN CATTLE ARE BEING NOTED,
FOR PRODUCING AS THEY’VE ALWAYS DONE - METHANE

ALL THIS CLIMATOLOGY HAS CONFUSED ME
IS IT US, HAVE WE CAUSED IT? MY MIND REALLY IS A BLUR
BUT AS I SAID,’I’VE LOST MY FAITH IN SEASONS
THEY’RE NO LONGER WHAT THEY WERE
