The days are drawing in,
the shadows lengthening
but still there is warmth in the sun.
The hedges along the lanes
are edged with sloes
and nice fat blackberries -
a good harvest this year.
There are hips and haws
and abundant red berries
on the holly too.
Could this be a sign of a bad winter to come
or is it just the result
of a reasonable summer?
Some of the leaves on the trees
are beginning to turn,
the acorns are falling,
aided by squirrels aiming at cars
and people passing below,
hoping for a hit.
Conkers are falling too
with their lovely dark, shiny skins
ready for eager children returning from school to find.
Up on the cliffs
beyond the lane
the sea beneath is like a mill pond.
Small fishing boats chug along the coast,
while a small plane overhead
disturbs the peace and quiet.
Intrepid walkers striding out eastwards
with their backpacks,
floppy hats, shorts and guide books
are walking the Saxon Shore Way.
Are those going west aware
part is in the sea?
A detour along the lane
they will have to take.
Do they really see
the stunning views around them,
or are they more intent
on ticking off another walk?
The path leads east
to the beach at, full of people soaking up the sun,
children playing in the water,
older folk enjoying a drink outside the pub
along with the intrepid walkers
resting their weary legs,
refreshing themselves before they embark
on the next hike -
some preparing to go west,
others east to who knows where.
