Whether, Weather?

by Keith Jellicoe

The first topic ... of an English conversation
would perhaps surprise ... every other wordly ... nation
of course you are right ... and would win the bet
giving thoughts of outsiders we are well somewhat WET!

So ... Yes it is ... Whether ... you like it or not,
depends on ... Weather! ... You like it? ... or not?
Remember ... it's quite often said that ... Some like it Hot!
however ... those ... a bit browned off ... with England ... not giving a Tan
should perhaps head to Europe ... for their very best plan ...
but ... those ... well ... less attractive ... on journeys to Spain
please remember ... oh yes .. that rain falls mainly ... on ... the plain!

Remember UK this year had terrible floods
traffic chaos & horse wiffing muds
months drying out, family strife
damage in millions & suffers to wild life
Is this the norm some say no doubt? ...
but the next thing one knows there's a terrible drought!

So what's our British hols climate likely to be?
and what to wear some say deary me!
sunny, cool, cold, dry or rain
our clothes decision so important - but what a pain
Tee shirts, sunshades, sandals, swim trunks, shorts
OR ... coats, scarves, hats, brollies, boots of sorts,
hot water bottle, sun cream, muscle rub and dungarees ...
Oh No! ... lump in trunk and pay the fees!

But what's this ... do we need to roam?
It's sunny, hot, calm and dry with bees a buzzing and emblazoned sky
& one cannot imagine a more pleasant way
to forget one's troubles and drift away
in England's countryside with view
a fine picnic and ... perhaps a glass of chilled white wine ... or two!
So I think we abandon hols and stay at Home!

Weather related songs and sayings are always around
& Singing in the Rain we would have found ...
for our Queen's rather damp Coronation and then rather muse
that perhaps the other reign would better suit a Royal's peruse!

Those Seasonal sayings are rather enlightening
even temperate climes can become so exciting ...
Wham ... Bang! ... OH! fork lightning!
the sky's lit up! and WOW! ... Gosh. It's quite frightening!
and then it's away ... leaving brilliantly clear ... vivid sky blue
with glorious ... rain drenched surrounds ... in a glistening hue ...

But soon Autumn arrives and quickly leaves ...
are falling from flexing bending windswept trees
and colours a-changing with tonal greeny brown shades
and glinting sunlight catching nature's displays ...

But can ... You ... shall I say ... Weather the cold?
perhaps like me, it depends, if you've got a bit old! ...
for before long it's ... those ... Dancing flakes ... you know ... you ... know
yes ... it's Snow, Snow, ... Thick, Thick Snow!
With Children skating and toboggan rides
and shouts and screams from fantastic slides!
Snowmen large and fresh snowballs
sparkling ice and ... Whoops! ... a few Falls!
Motoring oldies' unasked advice to Drivers snowbound caught
perhaps to be taken with a pinch ... sorry ... bucket of salt
... unless of course the 4 by 4 shiny new wheels
are at last showing off proud owners' expensive deals!

Here we have Daily Forecasts reporting early guesses
& to men's delights TV Weather Girls still wearing summer dresses
all revealing temperature rising Fronts
of course gaining lady viewers' reacting grunts!

Then of course the awaited thaws
and leaking pipes awashing floors
busy plumbers with blow lamps fired
and heating systems ... temporarily retired!

Now plants are sprouting ... Spring ... is here!
with fresh longer days becoming clear
But lots of showers plus too much rain
surely not those floods again?
No, ... No ... it's bright and sunny and quite mild
with outside fun for friends and family and every child!

So here we are nearly drowned in these precipitations
so I must give some explanations
for listening through this mist of time
and apologise for the time you missed
you could have enjoyed another rhyme
but one more thought to unfold
for what a joy I think you should all behold
after each terrible noisy stormy night
to pull back curtains on a beautiful and lovely Fairlight!
